What is veterinary physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy may be defined as the use of physical techniques for the treatment of soft tissue injuries and movement disfunction and is a recognised method of treatment for the prevention and rehabilitation of many equine and small animal injuries.
Physiotherapy encompasses many different techniques. This includes manual techniques and also the use of modern therapeutic modalities such as electrotherapy which includes pulsed magnetic field therapy, laser therapy, muscle stimulation, TENs and therapeutic ultrasound.
Stretch exercises This horse suffered a fractured
pelvis, months of combined physiotherapy and
veterinary care resulted in a pleasing recovery.
These techniques and modalities are commonly used to treat a wide range of conditions and injuries such as:
Tendon and ligament injuries
Muscle strain, atrophy, imbalance
Gait adaptions and compensation
Remedial exercise and rehabilitation is an important part of physiotherapy and as an ex professional event rider and instructor I combine my skills to offer an additional service in instructing and guiding owners through their horses rehabilitation programmes or personal training and coaching.
